Off-roading for everyone / Families and first-timers

Your first family drive.
A barbecue, not a battle.

Off-roading in the UAE is for everyone: a family in a standard 4x4, a cool box, a football and a sunset on a gentle dune. This is how to plan that day safely, who to go with, what to pack, and what Navra does for you before, during and after the drive.

The practical fit

A good day out
starts with the plan

The short version: pick an easy area close to home, go with a convoy, lower your tyres, download the map before you leave the tarmac, keep the kids belted and the water cold, and turn back early. The sunset is the point. The dune is optional.

Most families never get past the first four questions: where do we go, is our car ready, what if we get stuck, and who do we go with. None of them needs a modified truck or years of experience. They need a gentle area, a convoy with someone who has done it before, the right tyre pressure and a plan everyone can see.

Nobody in our crew was born knowing how to drive sand. Someone showed us, waited for us at the top of the dune and came back when we got stuck. Ventrax Offroad still runs drives like that, and Navra is the app we built so the plan, the map and the people stay together on the day.

What it solves

Built around the whole drive

01

Never alone

The single biggest safety decision is who you drive with. Join a beginner-friendly convoy or a community meet-up where the pace is set by the newest driver and experienced people drive front and back. Joining a live convoy in Navra is free, and everyone sees each other on the map.

02

Know where you are going

A first drive is not the time to explore. Use a known gentle area with an easy way out, set the meeting point and time in Trips, and share the plan so nobody is guessing on the morning. The crew behind Navra films real local drives you can copy.

03

Know what to do if you get stuck

Getting stuck is normal, and usually no drama if you stop early. Navra keeps an SOS screen with your position and an "I'm lost" option, a directory of UAE recovery operators, and short tutorials from Ventrax Offroad on tyre deflation and recovery basics.

04

Keep the kids comfortable

Go early or late, never in the midday heat. Child seats and belts stay on in the sand exactly as on the road. More water than you think, shade, snacks, a change of clothes and something to do while the adults air the tyres back up. The best family drives are short.

How it fits

Before, during and after

01

Pick a gentle area and a convoy

Choose an easy, well-used area close to the city with picnic spots and a simple exit, and go with a club drive, a community meet-up or friends who have driven it before. Ask them how hard it is for a standard 4x4 and what time to arrive.

02

Make the plan in Trips

Create the trip in Navra with the meeting point, the time and the people coming. Everyone invited sees the same details, so the drive starts together instead of on a WhatsApp thread.

03

Prepare the car and the bag

Lower tyre pressure for sand before you leave the tarmac (the Ventrax Offroad tyre pressure guide gives starting points), fill the tank, check the readiness score in Garage, and pack water, shade, a shovel, a tow point you know how to use, and the barbecue.

04

Download the map and tell someone

With Navra Pro, download the map area before the drive so it works with no signal. Tell someone at home where you are going and when you expect to be back.

05

Drive together, stop early

Follow the lead car, keep the car behind you in your mirror, and stop before a problem becomes a recovery. Share your live location with the convoy so the people with you can find you. Momentum, not speed, moves a car through sand.

06

If something goes wrong

Stop. Do not dig yourself deeper with the throttle. Lower the tyres further, clear the sand, and let the convoy help. Open the SOS screen in Navra to share your position, use the recovery directory for a local operator, and in a real emergency call 999.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Is off-roading safe for kids in the UAE?

A gentle area, a convoy with experienced drivers, low tyre pressure, belts on and an early finish make a first family drive a safe day out. The risks come from going alone, going fast, going at midday and going somewhere hard. Keep the drive short and the dune small.

Do we need a modified 4x4?

No. A standard 4x4 with low range, proper sand tyre pressure and a driver who takes it easy handles beginner areas. A lift kit and a winch are not what keeps a family safe; the convoy and the plan are.

Can we take a rental car into the desert?

Most UAE rental agreements forbid off-road use, and insurance usually does not cover it. Check your contract before you go. If the car is not yours, join someone else's convoy as a passenger first.

Where do beginners usually start near Dubai?

Families tend to start with the gentle, well-used areas close to the city that have picnic spots and an easy exit, then move to bigger dunes later. The crew behind Navra films real local drives on offroad.ventrax.ae and in the app, and a club drive will show you the right spot for your car.

Do we need Navra Pro for a family drive?

The core app is free, and joining a live convoy hosted by someone else is free. Offline map downloads, terrain and 3D views are part of Navra Pro. Current prices are shown in the app and the official stores.

Who do we call in an emergency in the UAE desert?

Call 999 for the police and 998 for an ambulance. Share your exact position from the SOS screen in Navra with your convoy and your contacts, and use the recovery directory for a local operator when it is a stuck car rather than an emergency.
